Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea hospitalizations and deaths among children worldwide. Vaccines currently under development could be introduced into the routine program of childhood immunizations within 1-3 years and could prevent this most common cause of severe morbidity and mortality in children. The international community has therefore recognized that the accelerated development and introduction of rotavirus vaccines is a high priority.

The Sixth International Rotavirus Symposium will bring together scientists, clinicians, public health professionals, immunization leaders, vaccine industry representatives, and members of the donor community. The goal will be to provide updates on research and public health agendas related to rotavirus, gastroenteritis, and progress with rotavirus vaccines. Latest research results, trials of new vaccines, and issues of vaccine introduction will be presented

The target audience will be policy makers, national public health and financial authorities, national immunization program managers, pediatric and infectious disease societies, scientists, researchers, bilateral and multilateral development and financial agencies, and other partners involved in supporting immunization programs.

Mexico City has been chosen as the venue because Latin America is the first region of the developing world to participate in the testing of the next generation of rotavirus vaccines. It will likely be the first region to introduce rotavirus vaccines into the routine program of childhood immunization.
